Media representation and the way stories are told about a community can be a barrier to belonging and inclusion. Certain narratives in the media can impact the wellbeing of individuals and whole communities, however the media also has the power to positively influence opinions and pass on accurate information.
DPA is partnering with Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono (IACT) to gather views from our community on media representation.
We are keen to hear and record examples from our community of false and misleading media representation, and also instances of positive and accurate media representation. You are invited to share your experiences, and also give suggestions for what can be done to improve media representation of our community.
This is part of a series of hui that will take place in various communities around Aotearoa New Zealand. Common issues will be identified and those will then be talked through with key representatives from media organisations to highlight changes that are needed. Following this, those media outlets will be supported in improving their representation.
