Currently, the only set requirement for a person applying for a principal role is to have a current Teacher’s Practicing Certificate. The Government has decided a fuller set of criteria is needed to help support the appointment process of principals and help school boards and applicants by creating a consistent set of guidelines.

The criteria will mainly be a tool for school boards to use when appointing a principal, but can also be used by current and aspiring principals to use when thinking about their career development.

The Ministry of Education is now consulting on the draft criteria and is asking for feedback via an online feedback form.
